Token House and Tokenhouse Yard

Well, we have been in our new offices for just over a month, and interesting offices they are. Modern, stylish and in the heart of the City’s financial district, with Bank, Moorgate and other major stations just a stones throw away. However, the building and area–Tokenhouse Yard, in particular–also have a rich history dating back to the late 17th century.

The origin of the name is of specific interest given how gold is sometimes used as an alternative to currency. The origin of the name comes from a time when local traders used “tokens” for sales and purchasing, and the “Token House” was where these tokens could be exchanged for legal tender.

Here is a lovely little article about Tokenhouse Yard that expands on the above and has many other interesting facts about the area.
