1 oz Krugerrand
The Krugerrand was the first gold coin to contain precisely one ounce of fine gold, and was intended to provide a vehicle for the private ownership of gold.
• 22 carat
• 1 troy ounce of pure gold
• Minimum Gross Weight 33.93g
The 1 oz Krugerrand is arguably the most iconic gold coin of its era and certainly one of the most pioneering. The first coin to contain exactly 1 oz of fine gold, it was designed to encourage private ownership of gold bullion and was enormously successful at doing so. By 1980, the various nominations of the Krugerrand actually made up more than 90% of the entire global market and inspired other countries to begin minting gold bullion at an unprecedented rate.
Each 1 oz Krugerrand provides a reliable 22 carat purity and one troy ounce of gold. The coin weighs 33.93g and has a diameter of 32.77mm. This makes it the largest of all the Krugerrand nominations and weights and as such is the most valuable of all its standard releases. There are, however, some controlled productions of limited edition coins that are hugely popular with collectors and investors alike and are therefore often of higher value.
The Krugerrand is consistently valued at above premium, which means that the larger the coin, the higher the potential return on investment. This consistent performance means the reliability of the coin’s long-term value only adds to its worth. This is particularly the case for limited edition releases, such as those produced in 2017 for the coins 50th anniversary.
With popularity comes some risk, however, and there are a small number of private mints that attempt to reproduce the Krugerrand’s design in order to fool investors into buying inferior products. Although government minted coins are usually considered to be the most reliable of gold investments, it is important to ensure you are buying from a reputable source.
