Gold bars are an excellent way to preserve your wealth and can be sold on for a profit. In general, gold bars are the most economical way of investing in physical gold, which makes them an attractive vehicle for serious investors looking to own large amounts of a non-currency asset. Gold bullion is a way to offset inflation; currencies are volatile, whereas the value of gold remains stable.

Small bars are easier to sell and offer more flexibility but do not realise as much value as larger ones, while heavier bars offer more value due to lower premiums, but offer less flexibility. A troy ounce (1oz gold bar) or 100g bars each offer a good balance of value and flexibility.

By purchasing physical gold – whether coins, bars, or gold bullion – you will benefit from not paying VAT, but may pay CGT further down the line when looking to sell it. This applies to investors realising a profit greater than £11,000 within the same tax year (currently).
